Improvisation

10 minutes are allotted for pre-examination study of improvisation (a) and (b) in a separate room.
Candidates are not allowed to write or play during pre-examination study of the improvisation examination.

(a)Variation

Contents & Level
  • A melody of about 16-32 bars with chord names.
  • Chords may include:
    Major, minor, dominant 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th b5(-5).
    • Numbers of choruses are indicated as follows:
    • about 2 choruses
    • 2-3 choruses
    • about 3 choruses
  • A melody of about 16-32 bars without chord names.
  • Numbers of choruses are indicated as follows:
    • 2-3 choruses
    • About 3 choruses
  • A melody of about 16-32 bars without chord names.
  • Numbers of choruses:optional
Procedure
  • Play the given melody with chord names by arranging it improvisationally, following the number of choruses stated.
  • Play the given melody by arranging it improvisationally, considering the number of choruses stated.
  • Play the given melody by arranging it improvisationally in about 3 choruses.
Points of Evaluation
  1. The ability to perform expressively by arranging the given melody into a complete piece.
  1. The ability to play the chords given by chord names correctly.
  1. The ability to harmonize a given melody.
(b)Motive Improvisation

Procedure
  • Candidates are to choose one motive out of the three given motives.
  • Improvize the motive into a chorus or some instrumental piece.
    • Ex. Sonatina, Sonata, Rondo, etc.
Points of Evaluation
  • The ability to improvise from the chosen motive:
    • with a natural flow of melody and harmony
    • with an appropriate form
