Number of Pieces Required
The number of Compulsory Pieces, Free Selections and Original Compositions required for each grade is shown below. Any candidates offering repertoire inconsistent with the requirements may be disqualified. The examiners will decide which pieces will be played at the examination.

Compulsory Piece
Choose the required number of piece from "Collection of Piano Original Works" series published by Yamaha Music Foundation/Yamaha Music Media. (Refer to the List of Compulsory Pieces for Piano Grade Examination). The grades are indicated to show the approximate level. Although it is not required, it is recommended that candidates choose a piece that corresponds to the grade for which they are being examined.
- One movement of a Sonata or Sonatina is counted as one selection for Compulsory Piece. However, selection of more than one movement from the same piece is not allowed.
Free Selection
Although there are no regulations as to the choice of free selection, candidates are advised to keep the following in mind:
- Choose from a wide range of styles: composers of different periods, various types of music.
- Exercise pieces and pieces for beginners are not accepted as repertoire pieces for grade 5-3.
- E.g. Exercise pieces by Czerny, Burgmuller, or Sonatina by Kuhlau or Clementi.
(However, Etudes by F. Chopin, F. Liszt, C. Debussy, S. Rachmaninoff, A.Z. Scriabin will be accepted as free selection pieces since these pieces are considered artistic works.)
- E.g. Exercise pieces by Czerny, Burgmuller, or Sonatina by Kuhlau or Clementi.
- One movement of a Sonata or Sonatina is counted as one selection for Free Selection. However, a selection of more than one movement from the same piece is not allowed.
- Be sure to bring the scores as examiners may request to see them (Photocopies are not allowed).
- Candidates may include his/her original composition or arrangement piece in Free Selection. In that case, the candidates should make sure they bring the score.
Original Piece (Grade 3)
For Grade 3, candidates are required to compose and perform an original piece.
The style of the composition is not specified. The piece should sufficiently demonstrate the candidate's abilities as both a performer and composer.
The score is to be submitted to the examiners in the examination room.
The copy of the score will not be returned.
General Remarks on Repertoire
- It is highly recommended that candidates play all the pieces by memory.
In case the candidate needs to use the score, a request to turn pages will be denied. They will have to turn the pages by themselves. - Code numbers are indicated for all compulsory pieces. Pieces without code numbers are not recognize as compulsory pieces.
